How do we temper arrogance when things are going well, and prevent burnout and defeat when they're not? How do we allow children to fail, and how do we teach them to get back up again?Īccording to Olszewski-Kubilius, this is all part of cultivating a child's psycho-social development, and, she says, "It's one of the most important jobs of parenting." That's not to say it's easy. That means we should expect children to have ups and downs, to have varying interests, to stumble at times. "What I think is more helpful to all of us-educators, parents and students alike-is a view of giftedness that develops over time. "The view that has dominated is that kids are born gifted, that it's a result of genetics and that our job is just to find out who is gifted," says. To overcome that fear, advocates for a new view of giftedness. Paula Olszewski-Kubilius, Center for Talent Development (CTD) director, says, "What often thwarts kids along the path toward high achievement is not their ability, but their fear." Those things are difficult to navigate, regardless of age or ability. With every level of high achievement comes more competition, complexity and responsibility. A support system is always vital, too.īeing smart comes with its own set of unique stressors and challenges. Parents need information to do their job well. The issues parents of gifted children face might be different, but they are no less challenging. Parenting ANY kid is tough, and parenting gifted kids is no exception. "They're smart they'll do well," is a common refrain. These apps are designed to help students who are experiencing academic difficulties.Many people think that parenting bright children is a breeze. Consider using one of the apps and tools from our many app lists. Praise improved test or quiz scores: (a) give the learner a concrete reward (e.g., privileges such as leading the line, handing out learning materials, 10 minutes of free time, etc.) or (b) give the learner an informal reward (e.g., praise, handshake, smile, etc.).ġ6. Talk with the learner to explain (a) what the learner is doing wrong (e.g., not attending during class, not using study time, etc.) and (b) what the learner should be doing (e.g., paying attention during class, asking questions, using study time, etc.).ġ6. Praise students for following the rules.ġ5. Give the learner increased chances for help or assistance on academic tasks (e.g., peer tutoring, instructions for work sent home, frequent interactions, etc.). Draft an agreement with the learner stipulating what behavior is required (e.g., improved test or quiz scores) and which reinforcement will be implemented when the agreement has been met.ġ3. The parents may reinforce the learner at home for improved test or quiz scores.ġ2. Connect with the parents (e.g., notes home, phone calls, etc.) to disseminate information about the learner’s progress. Assess the appropriateness of the task to ascertain (a) if the task is too easy, (b) if the task is too complicated, and (c) if the duration of time scheduled for the task is sufficient.ġ1. Utilize it when giving tests or exams to enable the learner’s comprehension.ġ0. Find the learner’s most efficient learning mode. Make sure that all instructions, questions, and explanations are delivered in a clear, concise manner and at an appropriate rate for the learner.ĩ. (It may be best to reinforce privately rather than publicly.)Ĩ. Praise those students who demonstrate improved test or quiz scores. Make sure the learner has mastery of skills at each level before testing a concept.ħ. Give tests and exams to the learner when they are more likely to succeed (e.g., after determining that the learner has learned the information).Ħ. Students who compete academically and fail may cease to try to succeed and do far less than they are capable of achieving.ĥ. Observe learner performance to detect errors and determine where learning problems exist.Ĥ. Alter instructions to include more concrete examples to enable learning.ģ. Give parents information on test or quiz content (e.g., what content will be covered by the test or quiz, format, types of questions, etc.).Ģ.
